Environmentally friendly flooring options…on a budget?

I need to install carpet in the kids’ rooms, and hardwood or laminate in the main living areas. I have a very tight budget. I will also need a couple area rugs for the living areas.

What companies sell more natural flooring, and what are the best choices given my small budget? By the way, I have small children who will be spending years on these floors. Thanks!

There is nothing as hard wearing, retaining (and improving) it’s looks and investment value as reclaimed timbers, particularly hardwood.

Try your local reclamation yards. If you are prepared to clean, sand, lay and beeswax (if you are not Vegan) the floor yourself, then it is an ideal solution. Work out how much you need and be open minded when you arrive at the yard. The other way to do it, is to tell them what you are looking for and wait, but it may be a long wait.

Well fitted and cared floor reclaimed hardwood floorings not only add beauty to your home but value on sale of that home.
They are ideal when you have kids, because as long as they are protected with wax they are near enough indestructible. Dents just add to the beauty of the floor. If there is a problem, just sand it back out and refinish the floor.

If you only use natural waxes such as beeswax or soya, then the floor is far safer for children than any other manufactured then treated flooring such as carpet. If for any reason in years to come you decide to change your flooring, old timber prices increase with age, sell it on, if it is hardwood planking it should last hundreds of years.
