Organic Chemistry Reactions

organic chemistry reactions
Can you help me understand Substitution and Beta-Elimination Reactions in Organic Chemistry?

Why does Beta elimination always compete with nucleophilic substitution? I dont understand. And how do I know which will happen, or more specifically, what would I write on a test? Im really confused on this topic and I can not figure it out. Please, if you can, clarify this for me. Thanks so much!

Substitution reactions can be described in two extremes, SN1, and SN2. In an SN1 reaction, the rate-limiting step is formation of a carbocation. The leaving group must pull the electrons from the carbon. It is assumed that no bond formation occurs until a carbocation exists long enough for the leaving group to diffuse away and the group having left does not influence any incoming nucleophile. If the RX compound had been optically active, then the product of the reaction would be completely racemic.

On the other extreme, we have an SN2 reaction. In an SN2 reaction, the bond formation precedes and controls the product formation. The nucleophile must push into the carbon nucleus. If the RX group were optically active, the product would retain that optical activity but it will be of the opposite configuration due to an inversion that takes place.

In between these extremes will be the reactions for which you have to predict the products and sometimes there are ambiguities or exceptions. Therefore, I find that predicting the products can be challenging. However, there are some simple principles,

An SN1 reaction requires conditions that favor carbocation formation, namely a good leaving group on a tertiary carbon, a polar solvent, usually water, and weak nucleophiles (often uncharged). Primary halides (unless allylic or benzylic) never undergo SN1 reactions. Tertiary halides never undergo an SN2 reaction.

SN2 reactions require conditions in which a pair of electrons are able to attack the carbon attached to the leaving group. That attack must precede bond cleavage. In order to extend the reach of the electrons, anions and especially anions of weak acids are common. High nucleophile concentrations and polar aprotic solvents (DMF, DMSO) are common.

The ease of nucleophilic substitution is: methyl halide>primary halide>secondary halide. Tertiary halides fail to react via SN2 mechanisms. In order to displace a tertiary halide, the halide must leave before the nucleophile can attack (Sn1 reaction).

Any factors that interfere with SN2 reactions will increase the amount of elimination. In Chapter 4, Examples 2, 3, and 5 result in elimination reactions. Elimination increases as steric hindrance to an SN2 reaction increases. In Example 3, tert-butoxide is a poor nucleophile due to its greater size. In Examples 2 and 5, the target carbon is more hindered by neighboring atoms and stereochemical factors that favor elimination. Secondary halides are more difficult to displace by an SN2 reaction and the conditions of the reaction are more important in predicting the products.

Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions

Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions

$54.86

Molecular orbital theory is used by chemists to describe the arrangement of electrons in chemical structures. It is also a theory capable of giving some insight into the forces involved in the making and breaking of chemical bonds–the chemical reactions that are often the focus of an organic chemist’s interest. Organic chemists with a serious interest in understanding and explaining their work usually express their ideas in molecular orbital terms, so much so that it is now an essential component of every organic chemist’s skills to have some acquaintance with molecular orbital theory. "Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions" is both a simplified account of molecular orbital theory and a review of its applications in organic chemistry; it provides a basic introduction to the subject and a wealth of illustrative examples. In this book molecular orbital theory is presented in a much simplified, and entirely non-mathematical language, accessible to every organic chemist, whether student or research worker, whether mathematically competent or not. Topics covered include: Molecular Orbital Theory Molecular Orbitals and the Structures of Organic Molecules Chemical Reactions — How Far and How Fast Ionic Reactions — Reactivity Ionic Reactions — Stereochemistry Pericyclic Reactions Radical Reactions Photochemical Reactions "Molecular Orbitals and Organic Chemical Reactions: Student Edition" is an invaluable first textbook on this important subject for students of organic, physical organic and computational chemistry.

A Handbook of Organic Chemistry Mechanisms

A Handbook of Organic Chemistry Mechanisms

$17.5

A Handbook to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms is designed to accompany a standard organic chemistry textbook. The book presents complete mechanisms, start to finish, without any steps skipped or left out. The mechanisms have been carefully written to show each step in a logical and easy to follow format. Students have enthusiastically attested to the ease with which they could understand the mechanisms. Reaction mechanisms are one of the most challenging aspects of organic chemistry. This book is derived from Part D of A Guide to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms. That book is a guided inquiry workbook that shows students how to study and enables them to learn reaction mechanisms. Student knowledge is increased step by step by completing mechanisms at easy, moderate, and textbook levels of difficulty. A Handbook to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms also relies on example-based teaching. Chemical reactions can be learned in context, the way infants learn. Learning reactions from rules is difficult when there are many exceptions. Substitution and elimination reactions are noteworthy due to the number of conditions that must be accounted for. With example-based teaching, you can deduce the importance that stereochemistry, structure, solvent, leaving group, charge, basicity, or nucleophilicity may have on a reaction. A Handbook to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms has been designed with the principle that our brains are pattern-matching machines. Therefore, an emphasis has been placed upon the patterns of reactions. Each chapter represents a basic mechanistic theme. That theme is repeated with the examples. Insightful explanations have been included with the mechanisms. This book will be a valuable resourcefor reviewing for an exam, solving problems, or studying for the MCAT.

The text takes a unified approach to the subject, aiming to help the reader develop a real overview of chemical processes, by avoiding the traditional divisions of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. To understand how chemical reactions happen we need to know about the bonding in molecules, how molecules interact, what determines whether an interaction is favorable or not, and what the outcome will be. Answering these questions requires an understanding of topics from quantum mechanics, through thermodynamics, to "curly arrows." In this book all of these topics are presented in a coherent and coordinated fashion, showing how each leads to a deeper understanding of chemical reactions.

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry

$81.94

Writing Reaction Mechanisms in Organic Chemistry, Second Edition, is an invaluable guide to charting the movements of atoms and electrons in the reactions of organic molecules. Miller and Solomon illustrate that understanding organic reactions is based on applying general principles rather than the rote memorization of unrelated processes, and, in turn, emphasize that writing mechanisms is a practical method of applying knowledge of previously encountered reactions and reaction conditions to new reactions. Students and research chemists alike will find this book useful in providing a method of organizing and synthesizing an oftentimes overwhelming quantity of information into a set of general principles and guidelines for determining and describing organic reaction mechanisms. * Essential for those students who need to have mechanisms explained in greater detail than most organic chemistry textbooks provide. * Illustrated with hundreds of chemical structures * Extensively rewritten and reorganized to make the presentation and format even easier for students to use * Contains many problem sets and answers to all problems to help students work through general principles and applications * Appendixes have been added to this edition that contain easily referenced information on Lewis structures, symbols for chemical notation, and the relative acidities of common substances

Aquatic Chemical Kinetics: Reaction Rates of Processes in Natural Waters

Aquatic Chemical Kinetics: Reaction Rates of Processes in Natural Waters

$270

Emphasizing intellectual stimulation over extensive documentation, Aquatic Chemical Kinetics has been designed with a threefold intention: to provide an understanding of the general principles of aquatic chemistry; to discuss the application of kinetics to the exploration of naturally occurring processes; and to inspire and develop new engineering practices. With these objectives in mind, kinetics is introduced with a set of basic principles stressing the elementary reaction as a basic unit of chemical processes. Coverage then progresses from simple concepts to applications in natural water, soil, and geochemical systems. Discussion of environmental factors and rates of chemical transformations, chemical catalysis, and linear free-energy relationships follows. A treatment of the features of chemical kinetics in aqueous solutions and in the context of aquatic systems (oceans, fresh water, atmospheric water, and soil), is also included along with discussion of reaction mechanisms and specific reaction rates in natural waters and in water technology. Special attention is paid to the kinetics of surface reactions, ranging from ab initio-quantum mechanical calculations and frontier molecular orbital theories to extracellular enzymatic reactions, the adsorption of organic solutes, and redox processes. Finally, discussion is offered on weathering rates as they pertain to the kinetics of colloid chemical processes, as well as the role of surficial transport processes in geochemical and biogeochemical processes. For professionals involved in physical and inorganic chemistry, surface and colloid chemistry, aquatic chemistry, geochemistry oceanography, and chemical and environmental engineering, Aquatic Chemical Kinetics offers a solid foundation for understanding the general principles and features of chemical kinetics in aqueous solutions and in the context of aquatic systems.

Chemical Reactor Development: From Laboratory Synthesis to Industrial Production

Chemical Reactor Development: From Laboratory Synthesis to Industrial Production

$281

Chemical Reactor Development is written primarily for chemists and chemical engineers who are concerned with the development of a chemical synthesis from the laboratory bench scale, where the first successful experiments are performed, to the design desk, where the first commercial reactor is conceived. It is also written for those chemists and chemical engineers who are concerned with the further development of a chemical process with the objective of enhancing the performance of an existing industrial plant, as well as for students of chemistry and chemical engineering. In Part I, the how’ and the why’ of chemical reaction engineering are explained, particularly for those who are not familiar with this area. Part II deals with the effects of a number of physical phenomena on the outcome of chemical reactions, such as micro and meso-mixing and residence time distribution, mass transfer between two phases, and the formation of another phase, such as in precipitations. These scale-dependent effects are not only important in view of the conversion of chemical reactions, but also with regard to the selectivity, and in the case of solid products, to their morphology. In Part III, some applications are treated in a general way, including organic syntheses, the conversion and formation of inorganic solids, catalytic processes and polymerizations. The last chapter gives a review of the importance of the selectivity for product quality and for the purity of waste streams. For research chemists and chemical engineers whose work involves chemical reaction engineering. The book is also suitable as a supplementary graduate text.
